Sugar output in Maharashtra is likely to increase to 112 lakh tonnes during the 2021-22 sugar season.

The sugarcane crushing season will start from October 15 in the state. The decision in this regard was taken in a meeting of ministers convened by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday.

A statement issued by the state government said that the area under sugarcane cultivation has increased to 12.32 lakh hectares while the per hectare production of sugarcane is expected to be 97 tonnes.

The government is expecting that 193 sugar mills will participate in cane crushing operations that will crush 1096 lakh tonne sugarcane.

In the 2020-21 crushing season, the sugar mills in the state crushed 1013 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and produced 106.4 lakh tonnes of sugar.
