Nigeria aims to increase sugar production

Nigeria can provide the additional requirement of 11 million metric tons of sugar in Africa provided the country succeeds in the Backward Integration Plan (BIP), said the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC).

According to the media report, Mr. Zacch Adedeji, executive secretary of NSDC said, "Nigeria has capacity to become the top sugarcane producer in the continent and meet the demand supply gap in the Africdemand-supply Nigeria consumes 1.7 million metric tons of sugar annually and 250 metric hectares of land must be cultivated to meet the demand."

He said, "The council is taking steps to address the challenges that the sector is facing to increase sugar production. The operators are facing problems in importing the adequate machinery required for the factory as well as in the field operations."
