To streamline the domestic sugar supply, some local sugar millers have decided to start crushing operations one month earlier than the usual period.

Three sugar mills in Negros Occidental have agreed to start their operations before starting the official milling season, said David Alba, general manager of the Association de Agricultores de La Carlota y Pontevedra (AALCPI).

These mills will start operations immediately after the raw material is available for crushing, he said.

The mills have responded to the call of Negros Occidental vice Governor Jeffery Ferrer to start operations immediately as the domestic sugar supply is declining.

According to the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), the raw sugar stocks in the country will exhaust by August as the demand has exceeded the supply due to lower cane production and delay in the arrival of imports.
